I've always been close to Becca. She's my first child and my only daughter, so that makes her about as special as a child can be. And I always knew that my time to really be close to her, and to influence her childhood in a positive way was limited. I happened to hear Zig Ziglar speak when she and her brother Michael were very young, and his book Raising Positive Kids in a Negative World that came out in 1992 was a big influence on my approach to fatherhood.

But no matter what you do, how hard you try, you never really know how your kids will turn out, right? Becca and Michael have already lost way too many friends in the past 10 years to addictions, car crashes and even suicides and prison.  I feel so blessed to have my two “kids” happy, healthy and productive in their mid-20s.

Never take this for granted.  I try to keep always keep it in mind.  But this is not about me…

While you always hope and expect great things for your kids (if you are one of those kind of parents like Becca has), you know that ultimately, it will be up to them, not you, whether or not those great things are going to manifest themselves.  The truth is, “if it is to be, it is up to ME”… it is up to THEM if and when they make great things happen with their lives.

When those things DO start to unfold, that's big news.  It's exciting.  It's motivating.  It's exhilarating.  For them, without a doubt.  For us, as proud parents.  And for their friends, their true friends, who love to see their friends succeed… the ones who don't get jealous or feel threatened…. the ones who we all need to be there for us during our highs and lows.

Which is why I'm writing this article about Becca.  I think it's going to turn into a few articles.  Maybe a short book before it's done.  We'll see where it goes… I just need to share enough about Becca so that you can really understand her.  And then I'll be done.

So, let's start with a little background info, which will have to wait until the next post, as this one is getting long already.

In the meantime, as you wait for tomorrow's update, learn more about Becca and the Miss International Jetset Magazine 2015 competition here, where Becca has been crowned “Miss Illinois” and is one of the final 51 out of 5100 original contestants.

If you agree that Becca would be a great choice for Jetset Magazine, then vote for her daily from now until December 10.  It's free to vote, and you can get an extra vote by spreading the word using this link.

The rules allow her supporters to vote daily, and that's what Becca needs those who believe in her to do.

For those who don't know enough about Becca yet – take my word for it that she is the BEST choice to represent Jetset Magazine and to be selected as the first ever Miss International Jetset Magazine.  You'll know why by the end of this story.

Becca appreciates every vote, and is working hard to position herself to win.  So vote now, and come back for Chapter 2 tomorrow.
